Mid Year Check In

Kaden wrote a post over at Lost in Focus which helped give me a kick in the behind and force me to start posting again.
The actual post is here.
My response, follows:
I loved this thread… in fact it’s what made me get off my ass and start posting here after a mini break. Both the reminder that we’re halfway through the year and Raul / Kaden’s long list of accomplishments conspired to kick me into gear.
As for me, here were my original goals:
* Shoot more with Medium Format
* Take fewer …

I’m alive

Hi Everyone… sorry i’ve been dead quiet on my side for so long. About 6 weeks ago work suddenly exploded here in Seattle and I’m *just* starting to get my head above water. When work comes in hard like that, I tend to go one of two ways with photography – either I do it even more as an outlet, or I don’t even look at a camera for weeks. This experience has been somewhat in between as I was planning on doing nothing but ended up doing a fair …

Back from Yellowstone

Got back from a 4 night trip to Yellowstone… was beautiful. My first time there and only my first (maybe second) trip purely dedicate to photography. Yellowstone was great… temperature ranged from 20f in the mornings to 45f by noon. Pretty cold but warmer than I expected and surprisingly, beautiful blue skies. Despite that, parts of the park were blanketed in several feet of snow. I shot film (all MF 6×7) exclusively. I’m neither a landscape nor a wildlife photographer, but enjoyed it immensely and tried to bring my own …

I entered the above competition this year… I entered three shots, one in landscape, another in documentary and a final one in sports. I’m not sure which image this email below applies to but it’s one of the three. I suck at entering competitions as I never normally do it, but I’m trying to change that this year. This is a nice hap tip to start things off with.
Dear Lawrence Ripsher,
Thank you for entering into The Sony World Photography Awards. The Honorary Judging Committee for this year’s …

Narrative Photography – A Primer

I’ve been mailed at least a dozen times by students who have chosen either me or the theme “narrative photography” for a presentation / project / etc. People usually find me either from seeing my previous projects of because I come up as the top result on Google on a “narrative photography” keyword search (www.narrativephotography.com also ends up here). Most emails I get are usually questions of what / who my influences are / were, what gear I use, how I manage lighting, etc. I’m always happy to answer but …

Why I Take Pictures

I’ve been asking myself this question for some time… or rather it often takes the form when I’m asking Akuri “why do i bother with all this?”. To put “all this” into context, in 5 years, photography has cost me…

It has been weeks since I last picked up a camera with a serious intent to take really good photography. Last year turned out to be a hugely exciting time for me with my cameara work, but in contrast, the…

Akuri and I spent our five year anniversary last weekend at the Sentosa Resort and Spa in Singapore. Was a great couple of days. Of course, it’s amazing how quickly the past half decade has gone by (and amazing how…
