Back from Yellowstone

Got back from a 4 night trip to Yellowstone… was beautiful. My first time there and only my first (maybe second) trip purely dedicate to photography. Yellowstone was great… temperature ranged from 20f in the mornings to 45f by noon. Pretty cold but warmer than I expected and surprisingly, beautiful blue skies. Despite that, parts of the park were blanketed in several feet of snow. I shot film (all MF 6×7) exclusively. I’m neither a landscape nor a wildlife photographer, but enjoyed it immensely and tried to bring my own …

I entered the above competition this year… I entered three shots, one in landscape, another in documentary and a final one in sports. I’m not sure which image this email below applies to but it’s one of the three. I suck at entering competitions as I never normally do it, but I’m trying to change that this year. This is a nice hap tip to start things off with.
Dear Lawrence Ripsher,
Thank you for entering into The Sony World Photography Awards. The Honorary Judging Committee for this year’s …

Tri-X test roll

A few test shots from my first roll of tri-x 400… developed in DD-X for 8 mins with ilford fixer. 100% scans show very fine grain for a 400 film. Sharpness doesn’t compare to say Fuji Acros (100) but when I got it right, it looked v good. I read that the DDX development is a similar effect to xtol (fine grain effect). I printed the last shot at 19″x13″ tonight (via scanning) and was blown away. I’m constantly amazed at the resolving power of medium format. Makes going back …

I’ve been hearing increasingly loud and frequent rumours that fuji is changing their film line up. those rumours seem true now. this shows the changes:

I think the net is that Neopan 100 Acros in 120 will only be available in packs of 5 and Neopan 400 is effectively discontinued. can’t seem to get a straight answer on whether it’ll be continued in other countries somehow. anyway, unpleasant news as this is my favourite BW.
I posted this originally over in lost in focus, looking for suggestions as I was about to …

Untitled

This weekend I drove a 9 hour round trip to find a waterfall I’d read about. We got there a little later than I expected and by the time we hiked over to see it, I realised we were on the wrong side of a ravine and the waterfall was impossible to get to. I’m sure there’s a way down there, and I will go back – but ended up with no real photos.
Instead, I took this on Sunday – 5 mins from my house.

Sakura

The weather has been fantastic in Seattle over the past few days and it’s coincided with what I can only imagine is the early blooming of cherry blossom (Sakura in Japanese). This was taken on my way to work with a new lens for the Pentax 67… It’s a 165mm f/2.8, roughly equivalent to an 85mm f/1.4 in 35mm-speak. Super shallow DOF obviously – this is straight out of the camera and scanned. No DOF trickery – just plain old superfast glass. Shot on Fuji 160c, which I’m using for …

The Falls (2)

My second / other shot from the waterfall the other day. Again, main aim was to provide a different take on a highly photographed subject.
