Flight in BW

Here’s the rest of the series in B&W. These are shot with a Pentax 67ii on Fuji Neopan 100 Acros (still my favorite film – I’m thankful it’s still available in 120 in packs of 5).

Flight in Colour

Two sets of images to share from our flight up at 6am around Mt Baker and the N.Cascades. We were airborn for about 90 mins in total – a truly magical morning. Because it was a friend of a friend, we just ended up paying for fuel. $50 for each of us (4 in total). Pretty aweosme deal. I can see how people learning to fly get addicted by this, and even more so for photographers like Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Anyway, these are the colour shots from a single roll of ...

Photography and Flow

It’s that time again. Self reflections and some interesing insights which I thought I’d share to everyone.
For years, I’ve loved photography, but I never really knew why.
I’d go to great lengths and expense to research and purchase equipment. I’d drive or travel hundreds of miles to photograph a scene I could view from a book. Or I’d relentlessly network without hesitation nor shame to gain access to a behind the scenes look at something I could read about. My theories for why I’d subject myself to this (and enjoy it) ...

Family

Ending my Highway 1 posts with a collection of family shots. Was a great trip. I actually shot prob more video than photography this time – I put together a video which I’ll share later. It’s funny, every now and then doubt occasionally sets in and I ask myself why I bother to lug around my huge film equipment with all the costs, time and disadvantages. Then I develop and scan a roll that I shot casually (usually B&W) and I’m instantly reminded why I love this medium. These are ...

Landscapes

Nearly at the end of my Highway 1 series… I couldn’t escape without including a couple of landscapes of Big Sur. The waterfall pic is nothing too exciting photographically as this is one of the most photographed locations on the entire West Coast i imagine. It’s a pretty cool spot though – being the only waterfall in the world I believe that drops into the Pacific Ocean.

Cows and Fences

More from Highway 1. Switching back to digital for a moment, here’s a couple of shots I liked. One is a outtake from the cow shot earlier, the other was just some cool looking fence above a huge cave. Processed in lightroom 3.

Two more shots with Efke 25

Still haven’t fully decided my mind up with this film yet. I’ve seen Tommy (Oshima) shoot with it quite a lot which makes me want to stick with it :). Here’s two lone wolves. The first is the famous “lone cypress” on 17 mile drive, Pebble Beach CA. The other is a guy who is where I want to be right now as I write this… Both shot with the Pentax 67ii.

Seals

There were a remarkable number of seals & sealions down the coast. Pretty cool actually. The first lot were viewed from a cliff somewhere up the North part of Highway 1. The second were sealions perched on Seal Rock as part of 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach (of US open fame).
First shot with Pentax 67ii on Efke 25 film (first time using this – iso 25!).

Second shot using Panasonic G3 with a 45-200mm telephoto lens.

The Lighthouse

An awesome little lighthouse that was a highlight on the most northern parts of Highway 1. I’ve seen bigger / more impressive examples along the coast but the setting was great. Lots of wide open space. Would be a great horror scene with the right subject and lighting :). This was in Mendecino county if I recall.
Shot with the Pentax 67ii, 45mm f4 lens on Fuji Acros 100

The Redwoods

Some of favourite photos from the redwoods on this trip. Was a surreal experience visiting these properly for the first time. Photos really don’t do justice to the incredible feeling of being dwarfed by these 1000 year old giants. It’s such a shame that so few of the original forests remain. These photos were Pentax 67ii on Fuji Pro 160. I’ve only used this film a couple of times and I’d forgotten what a great film it is. Awesome color / rendering and sharpness.
