The Resolution of Film (part 2)
When I received my Nikon Coolscan 5000, I posted a short write up on the resolution of 35mm film. So the true discussion of film resolution (in digitally equivalent terms) is a far more complex subject – one I may tackle one day – but these anecdotal examples are somewhat interesting… So now have an Epson v700 to match for medium format film and thought I’d follow up on that. First of all the details:
Camera: Pentax 67ii
Lens: Pentax 67ii 105mm f/2.4
Film: Fujifilm Neopan 100 Acros
Scanner: Epson v700
The image is a shot I posted earlier this week:
This was shot at around 1/500s shutter speed, with the lens wide open. I scanned it at 3600 DPI with dust and noise reduction both on and set to Low. Using these settings, the output of the huge medium format negative is a [drum roll] FIFTY megapixel image.
Here’s the 100% crop:
Pretty impressive huh. I was extremely impressed when I saw this. Despite being wide open, the lens sharpness is superb and the amount of detail being captured is immense. Note that if this was printed at a very respectable 200 DPI, it’d created a 40″ x 30″ print of amazing quality.
