Books, Gear and Weekend Plans

Work got busy the last couple of days so had no time to post. Here’s a quick filler post with a couple of minor updates.

First of all, my two Switar C mount lenses finally arrived. These are the 25mm f/1.4 and 75mm f/1.9 lens. Since I purchased it, I’ve seen samples of the 25mm and it gives mixed results – looks super sharp in some yet heavy blurring of the edges in others… will be interesting checking it out – it’s tiny by the way. I’ll post more on that soon. The other lens, the 75mm, I tried very quickly just now in my kitchen and it looks v promising. A telephoto lens of 160mm equivalent, it’s fairly compact (comparatively speaking) with no signs of vignetting or blurring. Could be a gem – we’ll see.

On other topics, I finally decided to pull the trigger on a Pentax 67ii today. This is a medium format film camera and I’m hoping will be the system that fills my photographic needs. I have a Hasselblad but decided not to invest in this system as I’m too heavily biased towards shallow depth of field / fast lenses and the Pentax seems to offer the best selection in this regard. For example, with the body and viewfinder, I also picked up a 105mm f/2.4 lens for under $400. This is equivalent to an approx 50mm f/1.2 field of view on a 35mm lens. Pretty cool. I’ll post more on this when the camera arrives.

Final mention on kit is that this weekend I’ll be shooting with the Zeiss 100mm f/2 Macro lens for Canon EF mount that I have on loan.  Not having a natural affinity for macros, I’ll be thinking about how to keep this interesting (for both me and viewers :). I do have a couple of ideas though and tomorrow I’ll try my hand at splash macros!

Oh, bought a couple of books this week too.  One was Rio  de Janeiro by legendary fashion photographer, Mario Testino.
