Olympus E-P1 Review Diary – Part 6 – Macro Sample Images

Nothing like a new camera to take me into an area of photography I typically ignore.
One of the impressive things about the included 14-44mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens on the Olympus E-P1 is the close focusing distance (25 cm) and the magnification this provides when at telephoto (equivalent to 0.38x on a 35mm). For a basic kit lens of this size, it can yield impressive results. Below are a couple of images that call into the macro category while knocking about with this today. Images are processed, cropped a little and sharpened for web.

For those browsing this page like me (great, thoughtful review, btw), be aware that the embedded JPGs are low quality to make this page snappy in the browser. Click on the photos. They're lovely and of much higher quality than the small-sized ones suggest!
How do you like the e-p1 vs the Panny LX3?
OK, I'm sold. That'll do me for a macro lens to start with.
Greetings
From what I can see, your ease to compose powerful and stunning pictures is God given. I have no doubt you have put a lot of work developing your talent but it is hard to improve something you don't have in the first place. You have this talent in spades. I know because I am very good but nowhere near your level.
You are Pavarotti, I am José Carreras.
Back to photography… I would like to ask you about your favorite lens; mine was the 35mm leitz summicron. The resolution and contrast were astounding.
Will digital ever attain the latitude (exposure) of film ???
Thanks for the blog… it is an inspiration

Hi John – apologies for the late reply… I’ve been wrestling with technical issues on how to get this blog migrated to wordpress (so I can do all the things I have planned for this site). I finally completed that task today so going through old comments. I read what you wrote last month and deeply appreciate your kind words. I checked out your site too – you have a v nice collection.
On to favourite lenses… I’m actually writing a series of articles on this right now but in the digital world, it’s got to be the Canon 35mm f/1.4L… Such a versatile focal length, awesome sharpness and contrast and ultra shallow DOF for subject isolation.
In the film world, I’m not a big Leica user but rate the Olympus OM Zuiko range very highly… I just bought a 55mm f/1.2 and a 21mm f/2.0 and will update on here how I get on.
Finally, still writing my review on the Switar but am blown away so far with its versatility and unique look. Definitely buckets of fun.
Thanks again – keep in touch.
