Olympus E-P1 Review Diary – Part 4 – Preferred Settings
Thought it might be useful to share a summary of how I have setup the Olympus E-P1 for preferred shooting. Some settings I recommend as a matter of best practices (e.g. Apeture mode) while others are based on preference.
- Picture mode: Usually Vivid, sometimes Natural. I started using the camera in Natural model but changed to Vivid, which is basically me being lazy as it’s easy to get the same effect in post processing. Either is fine but I don’t bother with the other settings
- Gradation: Normal
- Picture quality: JPG Large, Fine (when Adobe brings out a RAW converter I’ll prob change to LF + RAW)
- Image aspect: 3:2… Funnily I’ve never actually preferred the 4:3 aspect ratio so with Olympus cameras and compacts, I often just switch to 3:2
- Image Stabilzer: IS1. I was surrpised this was not enabled by default
- AF Mode: S-AF+MF. Neat feature this (see the AF write up in part 2), v well implemented too
- AF Area. Single point, center
- AEL/AFL. mode 3 for S-AF. This is where a shutter button half press locks the exposure and the focus is locked using the AEL/AFL button. By FAR the best setup in my opinion
- Face Detect: Off
- ISO Step: 1EV (for speed / convenience)
- I shoot in Aperture mode 95%+ of the time (and recommend this for everyone unless you need to guarantee shutter speed in which case S or M mode is fine).
- I set the main dial to control aperture (in A mode) while the secondary dial to control exposure
I think that about covers it. Very happy with this setup and it was a nice surprise to see this level of customizability

Lawrence, Have you left contrast, saturation and sharpness at the default settings that go along with "vivid"?

I shot aperture priority for years. In the end, however, when I got a camera that could shift for me, I went straight program, and on the ePen, it's even nicer, IMO, because the shutter and aperture are right there in big numbers in most vf modes. I can choose whatever combo I want by spinning either dial. Granted, some people still will prefer AV mode, but I recently shot a bunch of photos at a bike race in AV mode accidently, and the shutter was too slow in all them. Nice motion effect ;-) but not what I wanted. Ivan Basso will always be blurred for me. ;-)
