First 24hrs with the LX3

17 August 2008 7 Comments

I'll hold off from too much early feedback as I'm finding my impressions of the camera are evolving after just a couple of days use… Having said that, initial thoughts are positive so far and last night I was able to print a ISO 400 image (shot indoors) as large as 12" x 8". This is typically how I evaluate ISO performance (as lets face its the output that matters in the end). At this ISO and size, the print quality really surprised me as it was very good and it's going to be interesting how this plays out in other situations. I will have to go back and check but I think this is the largest I've been able to acceptably print on any compact camera I've used. With the G9, I never considered much bigger than 4×6" to be very great under similar circumstances. So that was cool. The picture in question btw was of my two little ones (shot in JPG, no NR, white balance set to tungsten but still looks a little yellow). The image here has hasn't been NR'd and you can just about see some noise creeping in but the colours are v well preserved.

BTW, this was 1/3s at F2 and ISO 400. Pretty cool knowing that this would have required 1/1.5s on a slower lens (e.g. f/2.8) at the same ISO or ISO 800 for the same shutter speed.

Another couple of snaps from the past 24 hrs (each are processed with basic levels adjustments, etc):

OK – enough for now. Check back in a week for more !

Thanks for Akuri's latest photo. She looks fine and I'm just glad to know she is doing all right. Take good care of her; she is a jewel. "For nothing in this universe I call/ Save thou my rose, in it thou art my all."(Shakespeare's sonnet; from which, I forgot)

Hey the ISO performance is pretty good for a compact. Seems to have preserved the fur detail in the blacks quite nicely too.

    I enjoyed the review.
Could you comment on the HD movie quality and compare it with others e.g. TZ5?
    Thank you in advance.
