The Singapore Marathon
I swung by the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon this morning. The number of people who turn up to brave the 80 degree (30+ celcius) Singapore heat and 90% humidity to run for up to 5 hours always amazes me. I didn’t spend too long photographing as I had gone down there mostly to test the AF of the 1D Mark III.
A highlight of being there had to be this however. I had been told that a runner by the name of Henry Wanyoike was competing. Henry Wanyoike is well known in marathon and running circles due to the fact that he is a blind athlete. The first part of his promising running career was cut short when he lost his sight in ’95. Now however, through the use of a guide whom he runs alongside (connected via a small tether) he is able to compete at the highest levels again. He is the record holder of the 5,000 and 10,000 metres for a blind runner.
Anyway, this morning I actually turned up to the marathon late and coincidentally, shortly after I arrived I saw Henry Wanyoike and his guide running along the stretch of road on which I was standing. Seeing the two runners head towards me, with their strides measured and perfectly in time was mesmerising. They were the very definition of collaboration, strength and support. Anyway, I snapped a couple of simple images. Nothing special photographically but I’ll remember the moment for a long time. Images attached below.
