The Mighty Snapshot
For the past year or so, I’ve become more and more serious about photography. I’ve invested time and effort in developing my skill, money in equipment and emotion in my images. Interestingly tho, I’ve realised that the better I’ve gotten and the more kit I’ve acquired, the fewer images I’ve taken and posted. My Fragments gallery was created from over 2,000 images, yet I posted only 16.
Similarly, as my eye has developed, I often tend to not even bother raising the camera – knowing a shot doesn’t have the right composition elements or natural lighting. Or the picture is aesthetically pleasing, but it doesn’t have enough substance or enough story to it.
Now, this is a good thing – it means the standards which I set myself are rising.
Now, the only problem with that progress is that it’s also easy to forget why I got into photography in the first place – to capture a few memories. Even if photography has become so much more for me since then, exploring it as an art form shouldn’t be mutually exclusive with well, having a bit of fun.
So – with the purchase of a new compact camera that I’m now carrying with me every day (plug: the Olympus SP-550, click here for my review), the floodgates are now open for a renewed passion for the pointless photograph. And I couldn’t be happier.
Here are a few snaps from the last 2 days – in all their splendor (click for larger versions).

Looks like you should start a PAD gallery. This would give you a great reason to keep doing this if you enjoy it.
Dear Lawrence,
What A treat ! This review in episodes , especially because this seems to turn out to be the camera I've been looking forward to for the past twenty years. Maybe more.
In a photo-contest I won a brand new 400-d with the usual standard KIT-lens.
Since the infamous quality of kitlenses: generally not known as adequate , as proved a number of shots I took I decided I would have to buy at least two extra lenses to meet my photografic ambitions and then came along this SP-550UZ. So I sold the 400D
at a fair price , waiting has begun…..End of the month rumour has it where I live ( Netherlands). Now there is one question burning, watching the dogs macro eye-shot.
Although it is probably improbable I would like to tell myself I see a reflection of a genuine lenshood….. Although the construction of a lenshood for a lens with such a long zoomrange seems wishful thinking I put the question to you anyway.
Boy do I look forward to this camera..
Best regards
Andries
Thanks Andries, first of all congratulations on winning the 400D (even if you did sell it :).
Unfortunately, that's not a lenshood you're seeing in the picture. Just distortion caused by the curvature of the eye.
Good luck with your new camera – give me a buzz when you have it to share some shots. All the best.
