Olympus SP-550 Image Quality

18 February 2007 2 Comments

Now I’ve finished all my reviewing, I am still getting a lot of visitors / requests asking for some images of more than just test shots. So as I’ve had the chance to stretch my
legs a little with the camera, as it were, I thought I’d post some favourites from this weekend. These were taken over the past three
days or so with an intent to show what the camera is capable of. They are not definitive by any means but an interesting glimpse what’s
possible with a lens that starts at 28mm and zooms to 500mm :). I’ll be
adding to the gallery occasionally over the next couple of weeks or so.

You can view all the images here.

You have a really good Eye and can see the Beauty of the world around us.

I was wondering how big of a print can you make from the file made by this camera?

I am looking at the SP-550UZ to replace my Canon 350D as a new zoom costs more than the Olympus.

Shutter Lag is important to Me for wildlife and candids.

I have used cameras ranging from 35mm up to 4×5 and am just learning about the Digital Medium.

    Keep up the good work.

The camera is about to be released here in Canada and this helps me in making a decision to buy.

Thank you Jason. In terms of prints, I've printed up to A4 which looks v good. This is what it's capable of at 300 dpi. Beyond that, it's really a question of required DPI vs viewing distance. Hanging on a wall, I don't think there's any reason why 7MP (assuming below ISO 400 here btw) should look good from a normal viewing distance as large as Super B and above (13"x19").

Re shutter lag, this is something you're going to have to work with. You can get round it as you can see some from some of the street candids I've taken, but as I've said before, be prepared to work within the limitations of the camera in this regards.

All the best, and good luck with your decision. Cheers.

    Lawrence
