New lenses, new faces
It’s my birthday next month and given that I’m about to embark upon a couple of months of interesting photo projects, it seemed like a good time as any to dip into empty the lens coffers. So this week I picked up the well regarded Canon 85mm f/1.8, the ridiculously cheap 50mm f/1.8 and the lens I’ve been after since I got the 5D, the 35mm f/1.4. A few people have asked why I didn’t get a new zoom (and instead only primes). It’s an interesting question and one I’ll answer properly in a later post (you can some good discussion on this point in a post from an excellent photographer by the name of Chuck Inglefield).
Given I’ve only had the 5D since December, this is the first time I’ve had a chance to shoot with really narrow DOF (depth of field). The 35mm sized sensor on the 5D means that f1/8 really looks like f/1.8. On my Nikon D200, the 1.5x cropped sensor would mean that lenses would have both a telephoto and ‘compressed’ effect, resulting in more like a f/2.7 when shooting with a similarly spec’d lens.
So this weekend, I got to try out the new gear on some familiar faces (my lovely wife Akuri) and also with a couple who are getting married in April. We’ve been trying to arrange the shoot for ages and this weekend it finally looked possible. While couple / wedding / pre-wedding shots are not something I normally tend to do, they are good friends of mine and were committed to doing things a little differently. And it never hurts to have a nice excuse to make a trip back to the old mansion.
So here are a couple of shots from the weekend. First, of Akuri:

Hi,
Great stuff. I have the 50mm 1.4 and LOVE it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to sell my zoom (28-75) and purchase the Canon 28mm 1.8. (I have a 30D with the 1.6x crop). Once you shoot with prime lenses, I think it's hard to go back!
Yes, envy is seething through me.. I have no cofferes to dip or empty.LOL
I AM saving for the 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens as I need it for sports and it will come in handy for other work – I hear (and read) that the lens is exquisite and a must for that kind of work.
It's pricey though, so I'm having to squelch the urge to take what I've saved and spend it on the 85mm f1.8 (which I want) or any other lens.. I'm very curious as to your reasoning behind getting primes instead of zooms. I know that most zoom lenses aren't quite as sharp, but I hear the 24-70 and the 700-200 are.
On another note, I love the photos you've posted here.. I'm dead curious to see wedding pics of joyce and Aaron.
The one of Akuri on the bed with her feet up in back of her is … well, dreamy.
all nice image, the final portrait looks even better in color than the original b&w version I saw. Amazing skin tones. The shadows on the wall are a nice creative touch. I feel like I know this old mansion. My favorite shot is easily "Framed". Akuri looks beautiful as always. The composition has a wonderful balance and the shallow dof is so pleasing to the eye. Nice work.
I absolutely love the shadow pic. Excellent one! It's subtle, and sophisticated. I imagine your friends are really happy with what you have achieved for them! I know I would be!
