The Last Visit
Anyone who’s been following my photography for the past two months will know that I’ve been shooting almost exclusively at an abandoned mansion which has served as the single location for my Fragments project.
Well, finally and emphatically, the project is coming to an end. I needed three final shots from this weekend’s shooting to complete the gallery and after a great couple of days, I am actually spoiled for choice. Fragments, my project which will end up with just 16 final images has actually taken:
- 6 weeks
- Nearly 15 visits
- Over 1,000 photos
- 9 models
All that for just the 16 images that made it into the final set. I’m very pleased with the results and while it’s been both challenging and exhausting, I consider the gallery to easily be my best work so far.
So this weekend just gone will actually end up being my final visit to that house until I return in a couple of months for a workshop that I’ll be helping organize. While I believe it’s impossible to exhaust the possibilities in a location like that, there is also value in knowing when to close a chapter to something and when to start something new. And that’s where I am now. Fortunately, my last shoot there was probably the best… A talented photographer and good friend of mine, Suwanee Lennon came in from Japan for the weekend and we had both Akuri and her close friend and model Dookie to work with. While I was able to get some fashion-style shots last weekend, this weekend was more in tune with my “traditional” (if I can call it that!) style of working with models in their environments.
One image that I have already posted into Fragments is below. Suwanee was excellent in assisting with the execution of this – and trust me when I say this was not an easy shot to get (and in hindsight, not the safest I’ve ever done).

Anyway, thanks to all who followed the gallery and fed back so positively. I’ll be posting the final two images this week, along with “The Last Visit” which will be the rest of the shots from this weekend.
In the meantime I’m going to take the time to figure out what project to do next. Oh and to all of those who asked me whether I’m planning to become a
fashion photographer after my last shoot, fear not – I have no
intention of going that route. That is best left to people far more talented
and suited than I at that genre.
In the meantime, I’ll leave you with one shot I particularly liked.

It has been/is a great gallery. I especially like this last photo of Akuri in front of the water. Really top-notch stuff. Can't wait to see the next project. :-)
This gallery was certainly worth all the effort. Apart from the dedication to the project, I also admire your ability to select the 16 images you like best from about 1,000, although certainly most of the 984 remaining ones would also have been worth publishing!
I've got to agree with Eckhart there, that's real discipline to stick to 16 out of so many. You must have made some very tough decisions over the past couple of months. Look forward to seeing some that didn't make the final cut.
I think one of the things I've enjoyed about that gallery is the fact the building is as much a 'star of the show' as the models you've used. It's pointless picking a favourite out, but one that illustrates what I mean, which also is the kind of photo that people will never forget once they've seen it, is the one of the man standing on the edge of a ledge, shot from behind.
One of the best galleries I've seen on pbase (or any other site I'm on).. seriously, Lawrence.. you took your time, chose the perfect ones .. told us each our own story – the one we saw with our eyes, our imagination, our emotions.
You inspired me to do Secrets, although it pales in comparison. I can't even get back in until the spring …lol. sigh.. freaking snow.
You are truly a brilliant photographyer to work with.
